The author of this book really had a different vision than the normal for an all female play. When reading this book there needs to be consistency, patience and quietness. As a play the book takes you to new heights of violence that you would never consider. This story included just about every situation and character you could imagine. This book was created for women of color who have endured more than enough pain but are lonely at determining what to do afterwards. The book takes you back to times where there was a different acceptance of violence, where different laws were in place, different music was played, different ways love was acknowledged, and different times for childrearing and upbringing. The poetry displayed in this book is definitely one of a kind; it includes a different type of communication and wording that enhances a unique floetry. This book consists of 20 poems that read out loud the story of seven ladies who represent a different color of pain. These women were recognized as “lady in blue, red, brown, yellow, orange, green, and purple” and their stories told different pain of neglect, abuse, and rape.
BONUS MOVIE REVIEW "For Colored Girls” (the movie) was directed and written by Tyler Perry. The inspiration behind this film was based off the choreo-poetry (book) reviewed above. This movie provided the exact replica of the poetry displayed in the book. The movie definitely took on new heights and will be available for generations to come. Poetry was cited from the book and used as actual script and movie lines. If one read the book first, they would have a hard time following the movie as an original story. However, if one had the advantage to see the movie prior to reading the book, they would have no problem following the original plot to the movie. The movie can take you on an adrenaline rush when you are not expecting scenes of an illegal abortion, relationships filled with physical and sexual abuse, family dysfunctions, and watching children being thrown out of the window. This movie has had so many positive and negative reviews but has won the number three spot in box office sales for the first weekend of its release. For Colored Girls totaled 20.1 million in sales and lasted 2 hour and 14 minutes long.
